Mother People Lyrics (from Lyricstime.com)
We are the other people
We are the other people
We are the other people
You're the other people too
Found a way to get to you . . .
Do you think that I'm crazy?
Out of my mind?
Do you think that I creep in the night
And sleep in a phone booth?
Lemme take a minute & tell you my plan
Lemme take a minute & tell who I am
If it doesn't show,
Think you better know
I'm another person
Do you think that my pants are too tight?
Do you think that I'm creepy?
Lemme take a minute & tell you my plan
Lemme take a minute & tell who I am
If it doesn't show
Think you better know
I'm another person
Better look around before you say you don't care
Shut your fuckin' mouth about the length of my hair
How would you survive
If you were alive
Shitty little person?
We are the other people
We are the other people
We are the other people
You're the other people too
Found a way to get to you
We are the other people
We are the other people
We are the other people
You're the other people too
Found a way to get to you
Do you think that I love you . . .
Stupid & blind?
Do you think that I dream through the night
Of holding you near me?
Lemme take a minute & tell you my plan
Lemme take a minute & tell who I am
If it doesn't show
Think you better know
I'm another person

| Bogus Pomp is a 10 piece ensemble based in Tampa Bay, Florida. Since 1994, the group has performed the music of Frank Zappa exclusively. Bogus Pomp's members are an unlikely combination of educators, symphony players, jazzers, and rockers, all with a common interest in Zappa's repertoire. This diversity is a key factor in the groups ability to recreate Zappa's compositions in the style of his 70's and early 80's rock bands. | |
| Bogus Pomp performs several times a year and has presented several memorable concerts with the Florida Orchestra, The Buffalo Philharmonic, a cappella legends The Persuasions, and six annual halloween shows dubbed ZAPPAWEEN. The group performed several concerts with Ike Willis in 98 and 99 and since October, 99, Napoleon Murphy Brock has been a permanent member. This has led the band to focus primarily on material from the period of time Brock spent with Frank Zappa and The Mothers. | |
| Napoleon's unmistakable voice and stage presence takes the audience back to the period of Zappa's career where many of the great compositions were being written, refined, and recorded. Napoleon, however, has not been silent in the 20 years since his last work with Zappa. Living in San Jose (not Reseda), California, he has recorded with George Duke, gigs regularly with his Bay Area group, the Nighthawks, and has performed with the San Francisco Opera. The vocal prowess of Napi, teamed up Bogus Pomp's powerful instrumentalism, has been a tremendous success with BP's growing audiences. | |
A Brief History - Bogus Pomp began in August, 1994, when guitarist Jerry Outlaw and keyboardist Rick Olson got together for some informal jamming. Both were ardent Zappaphiles and, inevitably, they jammed on various progressions from Zappa's catalog. This went on for a few weeks until Jerry mentioned the sessions to Bill Templeton, then managing editor of Jam Magazine, a popular music industry trade rag. The next issue of Jam had a square inch of text simply stating that Jerry and Rick were jamming on Zappa's material and within days, bassist Alex Pasut had contacted the two and, after hearing "Keep It Greasy", played for him over the phone, joined them. Soon, drummer Tom McCowan was recruited and a Halloween set, opening for local trio Deloris Telescope, was scheduled.
In the weeks leading up to that first set, the quartet was aware of the risk they were taking. Zappa fans are among the most demanding afficionados and Bogus Pomp wondered how their presentation would be received. Being Zappa hard-cores themselves, the group knew what the expectations would be. Simply knowing that led to a sense of trepidation until the evening of the show.
In a full page review of the set printed in Jam Magazine, music critic Eric Snider wrote "That four Bay Area musicians would attempt to do justice to Zappa, whose compositions are among the most complex and sacred in the annals of popular music, had raised a few eyebrows among the local Frank fanatics." Snider went on to call the set "a triumph". With the enthusiastic response of the ample crowd, and good words from a known unforgiving critic, Bogus Pomp decided to take it on and continue.
| Within days, in response to a tiny ad placed on the bulletin board in the music department of St Petersburg Junior College, Trombonist and Brass Studies instructor David Manson signed on as organizer of, and arranger for what would become, and remains, Bogus Pomp's 3 piece brass section. The group began to develop its repertoire and its audience. Working locally, BP began to earn a reputation as a substantial draw and received steady offers from local clubs and venues. |
The next addition to the band's line-up was mallet percussion, the sound that makes Zappa's music almost instantly recognizable and dominated his compositions throughout his career. The band has worked with several talented percussionists including George Bernardo and Florida Orchestra percussionist David Coash, who currently occupies the chair. Then came the first ZAPPAWEEN concert. |
Exactly one year after its debut performance, Bogus Pomp presented the first ZAPPAWEEN concert at Jannus Landing, a large courtyard venue in St Petersburg. The concert was nearly four hours long before a capacity crowd who stayed to very last note. This began a tradition of ZAPPAWEEN concerts, held each Halloween weekend. At the first ZAPPAWEEN, Steve Evans, a Boston businessman who had flown down for the show, introduced himself to the band, beginning a relationship that would result in a trip to Boston to perform at Ryles jazz club in Cambridge, in celebration of Evans' 40th birthday. (Lots of fun) |
In early 1998, former Zappa frontman, Ike Willis joined Bogus Pomp for several shows including ZAPPAWEEN 4 and the first of two concerts with the Florida Orchestra. Ike's engaging personality was a real crowd pleaser and his guitar playing was a good fit with Outlaw's but enough of a contrast to make back-to-back solos interesting. Pat Buffo (missing link in a tophat) added primal screams and other feral noises during those performances. Ike Willis currently tours with his own band and appears with Band From Utopia whenever they play. |
The Orchestra Shows - In early 98, Bogus Pomp, through percussionist David Coash, along with bank executive Fred Hemmer, presented a proposal to the Florida Orchestra. The idea was to present an unprecedented concert format. The Florida Orchestra, a full symphony, would peform a program of Zappa's orchestral works. After an intermission, Bogus Pomp would juxtapose 90 minutes of Zappa's rock repertoire. The orchestra was immediately receptive to the idea and after a few months of meetings and discovery, added the concert to their 1999 season and began what would become a 9 month process to obtain the scores and negotiate with the Zappa Family Trust, particularly Gail Zappa. Republic Bank, through the efforts of Fred Hemmer, sponsored a portion of the event and the support they provided was instrumental in making the concert a success.
Bogus Pomp enlisted the talents of Ike Wills, New York Big Band leader Ed Palermo, and vocalists Dave Martin and Pat Buffo, to augment the 9 piece band. The weekend of the concert also included a Composer's Symposium, held at the Salvadore Dali Museum in St. Petersburg which featured lectures by Andy Holinden, who teaches courses in Zappa's music at the University of Indiana, and Dr. James Borders, a musicologist who provided fascinating insight into Zappa's creative process.
Held at the beautiful Mahaffey Theater is St Petersburg, the concert sold out at nearly 2000 seats on January 16, 1999. Resident Conductor, Thomas Wilkins, lead the orchestra through a powerful and moving program and were joined by Bogus Pomp on the two closing orchestral numbers, Strictly Genteel and Uncle Meat. Bogus Pomp selected pieces from a wide slice of Zappa's repertoire. The concert was a success. It received a wonderful review in the St Petersburg Times and earned the distinction of "Best music event of 1999" by the Weekly Planet magazine and it's annual "Best of the Bay" awards. Bogus Pomp and the Florida Orchestra repeated the event again in January of 2000. On May 23rd, 2000, Bogus Pomp, along with Thomas Wilkins, performed the program again with the Buffalo Philharmonic in Buffalo, New York. The 2000 concerts featured Napoleon Murphy Brock as a regular member of Bogus Pomp by then. Bogus Pomp continues to perform the music of Frank Zappa and is constantly striving for a larger repertoire from Zappa's vast catalog. The band plans more orchestral collaborations and the ongoing ZAPPAWEEN concerts. Frank Zappa's music is timeless and will have a lasting place in 20th Century music history. Bogus Pomp is grateful for the opportunity to perform this music for anyone willing to listen.

A Zappa-picture

A nice picture. I've found it on David Ocker's blog, but it's originally from Richard Emmet' homepage (go there to see some more), and the pictures were taken possibly in '81, one of these used for the cover of You Are What You Is (the same hat!)
Posing for the sake of the photographer (we weren't really playing any notes).
Pictures made by John Livzey.

The Climax Chicago Blues Band based in Stafford, England was formed in late 1968. The original members were guitarists Derek Holt and Peter Haycock, keyboardist Arthur Wood, bassist Richard Jones and drummer George Newsome. Colin Cooper on vocals and saxophone made up the sextet. In 1970, the band shortened its name to the Climax Blues Band. The band has released eighteen albums and has had Top 40 hits in 1976 in the UK with "Couldn't Get It Right"; and in 1981 in the United States with "I Love You". The two songs were also big American hits; "Couldn't Get It Right" reached #3 on the Hot 100 in 1977, and "I Love You" reached #12 in 1981.

- Although Holt's penned "I Love You" was one of their biggest hits (peaking at #12 in the Billboard Hot 100, and staying in the charts for just over six months), the rest of the band hated the song, and refused to play it on tour, or to include it in compilations.[citation needed] The song can be found on the Climax Blues band 2-CD set titled "25 Years 1968-1993".
- "Couldn't Get It Right" was later covered by the Fun Lovin' Criminals on their album Mimosa.

A man who has not passed through the inferno of his passions has never overcome them.
Every form of addiction is bad, no matter whether the narcotic be alcohol or morphine or idealism.
Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.
From the middle of life onward, only he remains vitally alive who is ready to die with life.
In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order.
It all depends on how we look at things, and not how they are in themselves.
It is a fact that cannot be denied: the wickedness of others becomes our own wickedness because it kindles something evil in our own hearts.
It is on the whole probably that we continually dream, but that consciousness makes such a noise that we do not hear it.
Knowledge rests not upon truth alone, but upon error also.
Man needs difficulties; they are necessary for health.
Meaning makes a great many things endurable.
Mistakes are, after all, the foundations of truth, and if a man does not know what a thing is, it is at least an increase in knowledge if he knows what it is not.
Neurosis is always a substitute for legitimate suffering.
Nothing is more repulsive than a furtively prurient spirituality; it is just as unsavory as gross sensuality.
Our blight is ideologies - they are the long-expected Antichrist!
People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own soul.
Show me a sane man and I will cure him for you.
Sometimes, indeed, there is such a discrepancy between the genius and his human qualities that one has to ask oneself whether a little less talent might not have been better.
The achievements which society rewards are won at the cost of diminution of personality.
The healthy man does not torture others - generally it is the tortured who turn into the torturers.
The least of things with a meaning is worth more in life than the greatest of things without it.
The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances; if there is any reaction, both are transformed.
The shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases.
The wine of youth does not always clear with advancing years; sometimes it grows turbid.
There can be no transforming of darkness into light and of apathy into movement without emotion.
There is no coming to consciousness without pain.
Through pride we are ever deceiving ourselves. But deep down below the surface of the average conscience a still, small voice says to us, something is out of tune.
We cannot change anything unless we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses.
We deem those happy who from the experience of life have learnt to bear its ills without being overcome by them.
When an inner situation is not made conscious, it appears outside as 'fate'.
Where love rules, there is no will to power; where power predominates, there love is lacking. The one is the shadow of the other.
Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart - Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.

CARRYING SOME BIG STICKS; STEVE GOULDING POUNDS OUT HIS ROLE IN ROCK'S KEY MOMENTS
BY: Greg Kot.In Steve Goulding's Logan Square flat, there are few reminders that the drummer holds a significant if often overlooked place in rock history, from his early days excavating the groove for London upstarts Graham Parker, Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello to his current timekeeping duties in Chicago favorites Poi Dog Pondering, the Mekons and the Waco Brothers.
But on an end table in the living room, there's a telltale hint of Goulding's occupation: a framed picture of himself from 18 years ago standing next to Charlie Watts, the drummer's drummer. The opportunity to meet one of his heroes left Goulding star-struck, even though at the time he was in the midst of a creative burst that would be the envy of most musicians.
"Meeting Watts was a pretty big deal, because after Keith Moon, he was one of the guys who got me into playing drums in the first place," says Goulding, a soft-spoken 42-year-old who moved from his native London to Chicago in 1990 to live with his wife, Carol.
When the pair met, Goulding was busy recording "Squeezing Out Sparks" with Graham Parker, one of the classic albums to emerge out of the London pub-rock scene of the mid-'70s. Goulding was the timekeeper in the Rumour, arguably the tightest, toughest band ever to come out of that R&B-influenced milieu, and they would back Parker on his first half-dozen albums.
There were other inspired discs from that era that bore the Goulding touch: Nick Lowe's classic debut, "Pure Pop for Now People"; "Watching the Detectives," a cornerstone track on Elvis Costello's debut album; Wreckless Eric's "Whole Wide World"; two tracks on Dave Edmunds' "Get It."
On these records, Goulding evolved into the efficient stylist he remains -- a model of economy and restraint who, to paraphrase Keith Richards describing Watts, can swing with anything. "I spent about a year listening to Bernard Purdie's drumming on an Esther Phillips album, 'From a Whisper to a Scream,' and then I saw a video of him performing it and he was getting all these amazing sounds by barely moving his hands; it was like he was knitting instead of bashing," Goulding marvels.
Still, once Parker and the Rumour got hot, the drummer couldn't resist showing off his improved technique. "We made a terrible live album ('Parkerilla') and (critic) Greil Marcus stuck it to us in a review, saying how over-the-top the drumming was especially. I was mortified, and I learned."
After Parker cut loose the Rumour, never to regain his golden touch, Goulding rubbed shoulders with a few celebrities: He backed Davie Bowie on "The Tonight Show" and hung out with Bowie's pal Iggy Pop -- "Iggy stole my beer. Do you ask Iggy Pop for your beer back? I don't think so."
He played the television top-of-the-pops circuit in Europe with Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music, a job that involved a lot of lolling around swimming pools and lip synching, and he toured the world with the then-hot Thompson Twins, the not-so-hot Lene Lovich and the once-great Gang of Four.
He also played on the Cure's North American breakthrough single, "Let's Go to Bed" -- "If I played my cards right I probably could have played with them a while longer, but when I met them they were all tripping on acid and hanging out with Siouxsie and the Banshees; it was just too much of a leap for me, not musically but socially."
He also fell in with members of the Clash to back Pearl Harbour on her minor new-wave classic, "Don't Follow Me I'm Lost Too," and backed Garland Jeffreys on his acclaimed "Escape Artist" and "Rock and Roll Adult" releases.
In 1985, he joined the Mekons, punk-era survivors who had re-formed to play benefits for striking British coal miners.
"The first few gigs were really bad," Goulding remembers. "When I played properly it didn't feel right, and so I had to develop a new way of playing. I got to know them more and more and pretty soon I got dragged into this weird little cult."
As the Mekons assimilated more styles -- from country to reggae and even techno -- the drummer helped hold down the center with an open-ended, hard-swinging style. With Poi Dog Pondering, whom he joined nearly a decade after his Mekons debut, he takes a completely different, more tightly groove-oriented approach.
"I suppose I relate to the Mekons' attitude more, because in Poi Dog it's a pretty jolly, upbeat bunch," Goulding says with a laugh. "With the Mekons, their lack of commercial success becomes ingrained in you, for better or worse."
Which is why Goulding and fellow Mekon Jon Langford blow out the burners with four of their pals in the hard country band the Waco Brothers, which headlines Saturday at FitzGerald's to celebrate the release of their second album, "Cowboy in Flames" (Bloodshot).
"There's no way we'll ever do a proper tour, even though people want us to," Goulding says. "We've been involved in so many bands, so much politics, that this is supposed to be a vacation from all that. It's a night out with the lads, and a chance to play the drums for no other reason than it's fun." GRAPHIC: PHOTOS 5PHOTO: Steve Goulding, seen in his Logan Square flat, says he had to develop a new style of playing when he hooked up with the Mekons and, he jokes, "got dragged into this weird little cult." Osorio.; PHOTOS: Drummer Steve Goulding's greatest hits include his work on albums like (from left) Graham Parker's "Squeezing Out Sparks," Nick Lowe's "Pure Pop for Now People," The Mekons' "Rock 'n' Roll" and Poi Dog Pondering's "Pomegranate."

"Venus in Furs" is a song by The Velvet Underground, written by Lou Reed and originally released on the 1967 album The Velvet Underground and Nico. Inspired by the book of the same name by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, the song deals with themes of sadomasochism, bondage and submission.

[edit] Recording
"Venus in Furs" was one of three songs to be re-recorded at T.T.G. Studios, Hollywood, before appearing on the final mix of The Velvet Underground and Nico (the other two being "Heroin" and "I'm Waiting for the Man"). The music features John Cale's cacophonous viola as well as Lou Reed's Ostrich guitar, that is, a guitar with all of its strings tuned to the same note.
[edit] Alternate versions
[edit] Ludlow Street Loft, July 1965
The song was one of several early songs to be recorded by Lou Reed, John Cale and Sterling Morrison in their Ludlow Street loft during July 1965. This version of the song features a drastically different arrangement than would appear on The Velvet Underground and Nico, and ends with what David Fricke calls a "stark, Olde English-style folk lament" in the liner notes for Peel Slowly and See (the 1995 compilation album that the Ludlow demos appear on).
[edit] Scepter Studios, April 1966
An alternate take of the song was first recorded at Scepter Studios, New York City before being re-recorded in Hollywood. This take of the song is performed at a quicker pace and the lyrics vary slightly from the T.T.G. recording.

Burn BarrelFor those who've never experienced the Burn Barrel magic, they combine the Ohio twang of singer and songwriter JP Olsen with a swampy, swinging, tough-but-tender feel. Their sound is both urban and Midwestern, airy, bluesy, uncompromising, and consistently intriguing. In addition to JP, Burn Barrel comprises three other sunburned artistes: multi-instrumentalist and unsuccessful World Cup semi-finalist Mike Jung, who also plays with local favorites Alice Donut; bassist Brian Stanley, the Dudley Moore of rock & roll, who has trod the boards with the likes of Ray Davies and Tommy Shaw (yes, him from Styx), and gotten all creative with such luminaries as Brian Wilson, Garland Jeffreys, and Mike Scott of the Waterboys, to name but a few; and finally, Steve Goulding on drums, now in his 17th year as a Mekon, and still on his first liver! |

Bassoon & clarinet. Two musical instruments that are badly missing in FZ music.
Why shouldn't present day creative musicians give it a try? The starting point is +/- simple:
- Take a few FZ scores,
- Replace the " lead", i e electric guitar by a clarinet or hobo ( anyway much more challinging than a violin),
- Replace the bass ( = basso continuo) by a bassoon, a tuba or a harpchicord.
Looks like something for Finns or Hungarians. Add for instance (1)a few children's ( = toy) instruments and an accordion. At the end: the Triangle Solo.
For original "rock" music with clarinet & bassoon ( as bass) go to Henry Cow, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Cow

Is it allowed to add one comment on Henry Cow?
- Did you notice that - in the commercial adds to your blog - Henry C. appears half of the time?
- As for the Belgian aspect. Henry Cow produced the fabulous ( french speaking ) BE band, when they recorded in Switserland , Aksaq Maboul. Link in German : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aksak_Maboul. For instance : Un Peu de l' Âme Des Bandits". It's http://www.crammed.be/crammed/002/cra00201.htm
- Last Sunday Belgian classical pianist Daan Vande Walle, http://www.daanvandewalle.com/, performed with HC drummer Chris Cutler in Veere / Holland.

Speaking of Henry Cow…. (sorry), all Zappa fans should go to iTunes and get "Come Across" by Fred Frith, off his album "Gravity". Sounds like an "Uncle Meat" out-take!

I love stories about people's interactions with Frank wherein he displays a level of compassion and humanity which I assumed he was uncomfortable with. I also love anecdotes where Frank kicks people to the curb, especially big name media types.

Richard Emmet writes about his time with Frank really well, although it sounds like he's in some hard times at the moment which is a shame. Am I the only person who thinks that Frank looks a little strange in this picture…kind of like he's a little munchkin?
October 30th, 2007 at 5:22 pm »
1. Summary about scientific mistakes, i e overlooking interesting things & developments:
- FZ : Till now just cosy books & texts about FZs music. Nothing really beyond anecdotes.
- Blogs & New Technologies : The same goes for music blogs & other technologies ( for instance : autonomous radio stations ) linked to new music.
2. Conclusion: Art, i e at its most prominent expression, Music, is nothing more than a footnote for scientists.

That's not a real picture. Zappa is a different color from the group, he is also about 3/4s the size of the other people. I think that picture needs a UFO somewhere in it as well…
October 31st, 2007 at 8:03 pm »
Have to concur with bill: that is most certainly a photoshopped image. The perspective and proportions are all totally out of whack.

Duh… why do you think he named his publishing company Munchkin Music?
